This past semester, İzettin Yıldız, a postgraduate student from Mardin Artuklu University in Turkey, joined the Digital Fabrication Laboratory (DFL) for an internship focused on stereotomic design. Curious and motivated, he came looking for new tools and ideas to help shape his academic journey — and he found plenty to explore.
Over the months, under the supervision of Dr. Pedro Varela, İzettin got hands-on with Rhino, Grasshopper, and plenty of material experiments. From 3D-printed arches to full-on composite block prototypes, he tested ways of building with geometry, interlocking systems, and vaulting logic. Along the way, he dug into joint mechanisms and construction principles — always linking theory to practice.
Yesterday, the DFL team got together for a farewell lunch to celebrate his contribution, share a few stories, and wish him well on the road ahead. It was great having İzettin around — his curiosity, dedication, and easygoing vibe made him a real part of the team.
The DFL wishes him all the best for the next steps in his journey — and hope to see him again soon!
